After Season two dropped its finale on April 9, 2019, Channel 4 renewed the Northern Irish comedy series for Derry Girl Season 3, along with the filming started in June 2020. However, the production was placed on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In October 2020, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, that plays the role of Erin Quinn, told Metro that the Derry Girl Season 3 filming has been pushed back many times. Shooting in the hometown (Ireland) is important to maintain the truth of the series.
“We have been pushed [filming] now a few times, and I think we are going to push,” said Monica Jackson. It’s really important for us that we keep the credibility of the series and that we do not provide any series that is in any manner a restricted edition,” she said.
According to Cosmopolitan, Derry Girls Season 3’s celebrity Nicola Coughlan explained that the scripts are already written. She recently talked to the show’s founder Lisa McGee concerning the storylines, which can be”so brilliant.” Nicola Coughlan plays with Clare Devlin, one of Erin’s best friends in Derry Girls.
“We can not do anything involving a crowd right now, so logistically, it’s tough. However, I spoke to Lisa McGee lately and she talked me through the storylines. They’re so vibrant, she added. “Which does not surprise me – she’s just amazing – but it made me want to get it done now,” said Coughlan.
As of January 2021, the filming isn’t resumed yet. Coughlan said the Derry Girls Season 3 celebrities are still awaiting the production to start plus they”can not do anything involving a crowd at this time, so logistically, it is tough.”
“We were supposed to start filming around now,” she explained.
“It was angry since when this all started, I think that your mind makes assumptions to make you feel better, such as it will just be a month, it will be OK,” she added.
It is also reported that Derry Girls Season 3 is the last and final season of this series. The girls are growing up and they’ll pass from Catholic school. In a meeting, Radio Times Lisa McGee told she’d love to throw Dara O Briain in Season 3.
“Oh god, it’s consistently comedians with me. Dara O Briain, I love you. I don’t know if he does some behaving,” said the creator.
It is expected that the main cast from Season 2 will return to play their respective roles in Derry Girls Season 3. The celebrities are Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Dylan Llewellyn, Tara Lynne O’Neill, Kathy Kiera Clarke, Siobhán McSweeney, Tommy Tiernan, and Ian McElhinney.
