Three-door Land Rover Defender 90 will slash the larger 110 by almost £ 5,000.
Land Rover has named its price for the new Defender’s tri-door ‘ 90 ‘ version – and has also started to take orders.
The new model has been confirmed to cost in the UK from £ 40,290. That gives an entry point nearly £ 5,000 less to the reborn Land Rover’s range than when the car went on sale in a five-door 110-form in September.
This figure gives you a basic Defender 90 with the same 197bhp D200 diesel engine with the lowest 110 features. But the three-door is somewhat lighter. So, in 9.6 seconds the entry-level 90 manages 0-60 mph (0.3 seconds faster than the longer 110).
And while the cars have the same 199g / km NEDC-equivalent CO2 emission rate. The 90 performs marginally better on the harder WLTP measure. So it should be a little more cost-effective in the real world.
The engine range of the 90 also includes the D240 (a 237bhp diesel) and a pair of petrol. The P300 296bhp and the P400 395bhp six-cylinder.
The last of those engines, equipped with mild-hybrid technology, is comfortably the fastest Defender 90, with 5.7 seconds of 0-60 mph time. All vehicles have automatic transmission.
Land Rover believes the 90 could be an alternative to regular premium SUVs as a popular choice with urban buyers. The 90 loses the seven-seat capacity of the 110s, but it will offer with the option of a third seat upfront, allowing 5 or 6 seats.
It’s 4.583 mm long with a spare wheel in place – so slightly shorter than the Land Rover’s own Discovery Sport, and just 20 mm longer than the (five-seat) Audi Q3.
As with the larger 110, the 90 is being offered with a series of Explorer, Adventure, Country and Urban badged packs. These focus on everything from ruggedness and protection more extreme off-road, to styling and extras.
Land Rover says since last September 1,21 million vehicles have been spectacled on the Defender’s configurator. Within that number. More than half of the prospective buyers have selected one of the Accessory Packs and the manufacturer claims that the most popular addition. The Urban Pack has featured in 35% of configurations.
