Might it be possible to Ride a car that combines luxury, higher performance, and favorable environmental characteristics? Definitely. Though those three things together don’t come cheap.
The 2019 BMW i8 Roadster I am analyzing this week, using a bottom-line price of $166,795 (adding just $2,500 for your Tera World Copper bundle ) provides a zero to 60 miles per hour time of only 4.4 seconds (the Coupe is slightly faster), and it contains 27 mph in gas-only mode and the equivalent of 69 mph when its plug-in hybrid system is factored in.
For 2019, the i8 offers 18 miles of electric-only driving via its 11.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and may reach 75 mph exclusively on battery power. Although the electrical motor is simply 141 horsepower (up 12 horses from the 2017 version ), it also generates 184-foot pounds of torque and does not feel slow (off the line or cruising) in that manner.

The gas engine at the i8 is of the type that can only work in a plug hybrid (or a market car)–it is a gutsy feeling, 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder, producing 228 horsepower — working together, gas and electrical total system power of 369 horsepower. It’s fast since weight was kept down–actually as a non-invasive, it weighs around 3,600 Pounds.

In terms of green bragging rights, the i8 Roadster’s tailpipe is rated an eight out of 10 (with ten being the best) for fuel economy and greenhouse gasses from the EPA.

The big news for the i8, That was introduced in 2013, is that folding top. Although I had to look for the button to place it down (it is behind a door), I found operating the top absolutely delightful. The glass rear window (which is also separately controllable by a different switch) goes down, and then the entire assembly immediately folds down into a well, covered with a hard boot. The process requires a snug cabin, and 16 seconds, with wind buffeting.

5 good reasons for the BMW i8 Roadster

  1. Silent electric driving at the plug-in hybrid with 374 hp
  2. From 0 to 100 in 4.6 seconds
  3. Unrivaled freedom thanks to fully automatic soft-top
  4. Classy and iconic design
  5. BMW I Pure Impulse Experience program offers access to exclusive events
