VW Rugged Electric SUV Allegedly scheduled for launch in 2023

Internally the Boxy SUV branded as the ‘Ruggdzz’

Leaks from a boxy VW SUV have been floating around the Web for more than a year as at the end of December 2018. Auto Bild first announced plans for a hybrid “T-Rug.” Quick into February 2020, the rumor mill shows that the platform is still on the radar as part of the EVs “ID” team.

The electric vehicle in question known as the “Ruggdzz” (derived from “rugged”) and earmarked for release in 2023.

The British publication, however, says the streamlined hybrid SUV is currently in a preliminary phase of development. So, much could change between now and the commercial introduction that is yet to be verified.

The article goes on to mention that VW is developing two models of the Ruggdzz:

One measuring 4.6-meter (181.1-inches) with five seats and an extended version with a third row.

VW lifts the SUV performance:

Autocar says those with early access to the vehicle’s design have described the new zero-emission SUV as having a “distinctly boxy appearance”. With a full-width grill featuring triangular headlights. And an almost horizontal windshield, upright windscreen, almost flat roofline, and sheer sides.”

The report mentions it “departs drastically” from the new ID.4. It is said to have a special glass panel C-pillar to make it look transparent. In doing so, the greenhouse and side profile of the vehicle would stand out from the other ID-badged crossover and SUVs.

The new Ruggdzz expected to offer an all-wheel-drive experience. With dual electric motors on the MEB platform that debuted last year with the ID.3 electric hatch–one for each axle. Further models of the hybrid SUV could offer including an “extreme edition” with ample ground clearance, roof-mounted lights, and other off-road features.

Curiously, SEAT and Skoda could sell their own Ruggdzz versions. The newly formed Jetta brand could also be offering a localized edition in China.
