2020 The BMW 8 Series is a fast car but a poor sale.
So much production and not enough publicity is a chicken-and-egg question.
The second sentence of the Wikipedia article for the first generation of the BMW 8 Series from 1990 to 1999. “While the original series was replaced in 1990. A common misunderstanding is that the 8 Series so established as a replacement. It in fact in a new product class targeted at a different market. With a significantly higher price and output than the 6 Series.”
As good as the 8 Series was as a promotional vehicle, we know that the model-line dogleg did not fulfill its dealership promise. With BMW turning the same trick 20 years later to re-open the 8 Series series, the report in Automotive News shows that dealers are not loving the perfect launch.
About Dealers:
Several dealers told the source that the 8 Series national inventory rivals any other BMW brand. Worse still, of the 2,000 8 Series vehicles either sold to dealers or on their way as of earlier this month. About a third of them are listed as Priority 5. Which happens when dealers do not want the difficulty of selling a vehicle and choose another dealer to handle it.
The flagship comes in as many as 15 models. Including the coupe, sedan, and four-door body types, three engines, and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. With identical to the 4 Series offering 14 versions. Such plentiful opportunities for the 8 Series could have driven retailers to order more vehicles than the pool of customers should have consumed. Because, unlike the 4 Series, the model so a brand-new offering without a large and well-established fan base.
So with an 8 series costing a dealer as much as $500 a month in interest. It’s no wonder dealers are searching for someone to get the cars out of the shop. Retailers cited in the article claim that BMW did not market the car adequately or properly. The automaker invested more of its ads on the new X7, which fair for the hot market model that sold 21,574 units in the U.S. in 10 months last year, compared to 8 shipments of 4,410 units in the whole year.
