The passenger vehicle market in 2025 recorded steady growth and visible changes in India. The SUV demand remained strong, while competition increased across price segments. Maruti Suzuki stayed at the top by sales volume.
Subsequently, Mahindra moved to second place, and Hyundai and Tata Motors saw reduced market shares. The annual data reflects evolving consumer demand and brand positioning across India.
Maruti Suzuki Maintains Leadership in Passenger Vehicle Sales
In the year 2025, Maruti Suzuki continued to be the best-selling carmaker in India. The company had made sales of 1,786,226 units in hatchback, sedan, and SUV. Its market share was at 39.91% which is relatively low compared to the year before.
Nonetheless, Maruti still maintained a broad margin over all the competition in the country. Maruti had a number of high-volume models that contributed to the overall performance of the company in the year. Dzire was the best-selling car in India.
Wagon R, Swift, Ertiga, Fronx, and Brezza also recorded good annual figures. These models guaranteed homogeneous demand in cities and small towns.
Mahindra Secures Second Position Through SUV Focus
Mahindra rose to second place among Indian carmakers in 2025 by annual sales. The company sold 592,771 vehicles during the year. Its market share increased to 13.25% from 2024 levels. This growth reflected sustained demand for utility-focused vehicles.
Scorpio, Thar, XUV700, XUV3XO, and Bolero remained major contributors. New launches added incremental volumes across urban and semi-urban markets. Electric vehicles formed about 7%of Mahindra’s total sales. This mix supported steady performance across fuel types and price ranges.
Tata Motors and Hyundai Experience Market Share Pressure
Tata Motors ranked third with total sales of 567,607 units in 2025. Its market share declined to 12.68% amid rising segment competition. Nexon and Punch continued to generate large volumes for the brand. These models remained key to Tata’s annual sales stability.
Hyundai slipped to fourth position with sales of 559,558 units. Its market share reduced to 12.50% compared to the previous year. Creta remained the best-selling SUV in the Indian market. However, slower growth across other models affected Hyundai’s ranking.
Toyota, Kia, and Others Complete the Top Ten List
Toyota finished fifth with sales of 320,703 units during 2025. Its market share rose to 7.17% over the year. Innova Crysta and Hycross continued to see stable demand. Rebadged models also supported Toyota’s overall volumes.
Kia secured sixth place with 259,043 units sold and a 5.79% share. Skoda Volkswagen crossed one lakh units and ranked seventh. MG Motor, Honda, and Renault followed in the remaining positions. These brands faced intense competition in lower volume segments across India.
