BMW’s latest incarnation of the Z4 which has a few tech versions of that in its roadster. Roadsters are fun vehicles and are top-down, nimble little cars that are summertime molded into steel, rubber, and glass.
The BMW Z4 has wonderful handling and power lane-keep assist isn’t overbearing. Its tech on the road is very impressive and runs into some issues when we try to get car play to work. BMW has built a proper roadster that’ll appease enthusiasts and regular drivers alike.
The Z4 has returned at a price starting at $49,700 after a four-year hiatus. The BMW Z4 M40i will be a power boost and performance improvement for 2020. The BMW Z4 currently shares its turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with the Toyota Supra, along with its claimed 250kW and 500Nm outputs.
The Z4 M40i is expected to get an updated version of the same engine making 285kW and 500Nm which is identical to what’s is on offer in the M340i xDrive and X3 M40i with which the roadster shares its engine which results that it is quick at any stage of driving which is proved by the fact that it’ll do zero to 60 in 3.9 seconds which is slightly slower than Toyota’s claim of 4.4 seconds for the Supra.
It has all the characteristics of a proper sports car with tight suspension that keeps it glued to the road. Steering is precise with the rear-wheel-drive Z4 offering just a tiny bit of oversteering with all the safety items being taken care of.
It provides a satisfying driving experience though enthusiasts would be disappointed when they discover this car does not offer a manual transmission.
The automatic 8-speed transmission is paired perfectly with the engine and paddle shifters are available for extra control over the driving experience. It is loaded with the comforts and tech you would expect from a BMW car.
The company’s infotainment system could be accessed via the touchscreen or scroll wheel and the inclusion of the “Hey BMW” voice assistant is a reminder that voice assistants are the future of controlling everything in your car without taking your eyes off the road. M40i is an extra special and a true sports car roadster in nearly every sense of the word.
