BMW launches its BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo this week along with the new look of 5 Series and Touring wagon, but it will not come to Australia.
Reports of the BMW 6 Series GT’s departure from Australian showrooms will come just days after the company’s UK division axed the liftback from its line-up.
The British website reports the decision made to drop the model there due to low sales. Also due to the comparative success of its SUV models.
However, the BMW Australia did not blame weak sales for dropping the model locally. The BMW 6 Series GT has always been a niche product for Australia. It will continue to cater to specific customers by selling products that will suit their individual requirements.
The BMW 6 Series GT launched in the late year 2017, with 233 examples sold by the end of this year.
The dropping of the BMW 6 Series GT from the local line-up means that BMW Australia will have no models for directly competing with the Audi A7 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz CLS.
The A7 achieves 123 sales in the year 2019. However the CLS’s 2019 results for 220 cars registered in 2019. The CLS nearly tops the 6er’s lifetime sales.
In Europe, the BMW 6 Series refreshed features such as 48-volt mild-hybrid technology across all trims. With a revised front end design, and LED headlights.
In addition, a digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen sports leather steering wheel with rearranged function buttons. Also, a suite of safety including steering, parking, lane-keep. So reversing assist will come as standard on the new BMW 6 Series GT.
