Earlier this year, we’ve revealed some of the technical details surrounding the upcoming BMW i4, in particular, the four-door coupe with the latest BMW EV drivetrain. Today, a new report from CNET comes to confirm our previous statements.
According to the US outlet, the BMW i4 will come with an 80kWh battery, producing about 390 kW – about 530 horsepower. It will take about 4 seconds with a top speed of 62 mph, and the BMW i4 will have an electronically limited top speed of 120 mph.
This new piece of information matches our previous report, even though we believe the BMW i4 60kWh version will also be offered, similar to Tesla’s product lineup.
Next on the list to be revealed from CNET is the battery pack used in the BMW i4, which once again matches our sources. The BMW i4 will come with the latest and greatest battery pack – Dubbed Generation 5 – which is the generation ahead of the upcoming iX3.
CNET has also mentioned that the 2021 BMW i4’s battery module will weigh about 1,200 pounds.
When it comes to charging rate, the report mentions a 150-kW DC fast charger that should be able to charge the i4 to 80 percent in about 35 minutes. CNET says the i4 can add a range of 62 miles in about 6 minutes, while the current i3 hatchback takes about 17 minutes to do it.

The range, you can ask. Well, the driving range for the BMW i4 80kWh variant is estimated to be around 373 miles on the European WLTP cycle. The US EPA rating should probably be around 340–350 miles.
As we have also learned in the past, the Generation 5 electric drive system is scalable for power outputs between 90 kW and 300 kW. BMW has already demonstrated that it can achieve even more.
The Power BEV 5 Series was displayed with 720 hp (530kW) and accelerated from 0-62 mph in under three seconds.
The BMW i4 will be built in Munich starting in 2021 and will make its way into other markets after that launch.
