Given that a majority of the world is presently under self-quarantine amidst the coronavirus crisis, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to hear that many have turned to stream services such as Netflix to pass the time. According to a new report from Variety, there are a few specific programs that viewers have been turning to during this quarantine period. Besides shows like Tiger King and Ozark nabbing millions of viewers, Mark Wahlberg’s movie Spenser Confidential also saw many individuals tuning in to watch the action-comedy, together with the movie reportedly being streamed through an impressive 85 million families since its release.
Variety noted that Spenser Confidential, that was led by Peter Berg and celebrities Wahlberg, Winston Duke, and Alan Arkin, was checked out by 85 million households since it fell on Netflix on March 6. It should be noted that Netflix uses a different metric than television. The streaming service counts a household as having viewed a program though it had been on for just about two minutes. Needless to say, considering that many across the country are awarded the security and quarantine measures in place, it is clear to see a great rise in viewership amongst Netflix’s programming. The service acknowledged this rise in viewership may not survive as measures that were self-isolation simplicity up.
“We are acutely aware that we’re lucky to have a service that is more meaningful for people confined in the home, and we can operate remotely with minimal disruption in the short to medium term,” Netflix’s statement read. “Like other home entertainment services, we’re seeing briefly higher seeing an enhanced membership development. In our case, this is offset by a harshly stronger U.S. dollar, depressing our international earnings, resulting in revenue-as-forecast. We expect to see to decline and membership growth to decelerate as house confinement endings, which we hope is soon.”
As Mentioned Before, Spenser Confidential was released on Netflix on March 6. Before the film’s release, Wahlberg talked with The Wrap concerning the feature, which was his first initial program for Netflix. In his interview, the celebrity addressed the prospect if it is something that audiences want to know more about bringing more of the narrative of Spenser to Netflix.
“I love the fact that audiences can decide when and where they want to view it at their speed and in their own time,” he said. “It’s one of these things if crowds want it and fall in love with it. The reaction that we’ve gotten so far seems like they’ll need another one, and then it is going to be the task of making it simpler, cooler and different, and I have already talked to Brian Helgeland and Pete about some probable ideas. So, we’ll see what happens.”
