James Cameron Directing ‘Avatar 2’ Reveals Latest Underwater Scenes

Over the last ten years, we’ve seen countless movie franchises come and go, but few have experienced James Cameron’s Avatar’s worldwide appeal. Launched in December 2009, the movie continues to hold the record as the highest-grossing movie of all time, pulling in $2.782 billion worldwide and while that record might be about to collapse, the potency of Avatar shouldn’t be overlooked. We’ve been patiently waiting for sequels to arrive since, and they have some gigantic plans for the future, though the team behind the franchise has been taking its time.

Cameron famously conceived the idea about 15 years before it came out. He needed to wait for technology to catch up to his vision, and the sequels needed more advancement. His team and Cameron allegedly spent a year and a half developing technology to enable the performance capture scenes. Cameron has made no secret of his fascination. Fortunately, it sounds like his team’s efforts have paid off. Cameron discussed the Avatar sequels’ underwater scenes in an interview with Yahoo last year.

With film production shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, there has been some question regarding whether Avatar 2 will be able to create its release date in December 2021, given the sheer extensiveness of the project. However, for the time being, the movie is sticking with that date and continuing “virtual” production on its many, many VFX elements remotely. Meanwhile, by releasing behind the scenes pictures from the 22, the social media promoters of the Avatar franchise continue to build expectancy.

The images in question were shared into the official Avatar Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. In one photo, we can see Cameron sitting. In another pic, we get a nearer view of Cameron directing, with the waterline bisecting the photo and revealing the actors are sitting on pool noodles, apparently so they don’t become tired treading water before they have to picture Unfortunately for us, it is unclear that actors are in the pool getting orders from Cameron.

This picture set is one of two posts featuring the new Avatar two images. In a tweet from April 29, fans were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at Avatar stars Sigourney Weaver and Joel David Moore, who play with Norm and Grace in between filming. The new images from Avatar two have helped keep fans updated and intrigued by the sequel to 2009’s Avatarsince we won’t really get to see the first of four planned sequels until December 2021.
