It’s been a wild ride for lovers of the devilish authorities procedural Lucifer, based on the DC Comics character. After the titular angel spent three seasons charming the pants off us on the original community, Fox of the show, the series was canceled. Thankfully, Netflix immediately scooped it up. After some doubt about Lucifer’s future, the giant that was streaming announced that the show
would be returning for a fifth and final season.
This was excellent news, as season 4 was a wild ride that ended with a few fairly extreme developments. We had been introduced to Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) old fire, Eve (Inbar Lavi), we saw the kidnapping of the half-angel infant, Charlie, and everything had been capped off with Lucifer descending to Hell to protect against an ancient prophecy regarding wicked taking over the Earth from coming true. It was a great deal for viewers and the figures to process and, thankfully, we’ll get a final season to wrap up everything.
As for when we could expect to see season 5, who is confirmed to be coming back, and in which the story is going to go, we’ve got lots of facts to sift through while we wait for the premiere. Let’s get.
When is Lucifer season 5 dropping on Netflix?
In the time of the writing, Netflix hasn’t announced a redate for season 5 of Lucifer. We do have some clues about the products which can help us make some guesses.
On September 5th, 2019, the Netflix-affiliated Twitter account Watch What has Next tweeted a photograph of the cast with the caption,”#Lucifer Season 5 starts filming tomorrow!! Can’t wait.” Another production update came in February 2020, when showrunner Ildy Modrovich took to Twitter to declare: “Last day in [the Lucifer writer’s] room. They’ll always be my family.”
All this fantastic news came before filming was stopped, along with most other TV and film productions, on account of this COVID-19 pandemic. We do understand that filming was underway before manufacturing went on hiatus, which the authors are finished crafting the season, while the delay may be discouraging for lovers. So, when things get back up and running, it will result in some new episodes being seen by us sooner, rather than later.
One final thing to consider is that, before the production hiatus, Netflix announced plans to divide the final season into two halves, airing two collections of eight episodes with a rest between (through TVLine). Based on how far production was before it shut down, this could mean we receive new episodes as they won’t need to complete before releasing new material producing the whole season. However, all we can do now is speculate. Our best guess is that we will be waiting until 2020, or even some time in 2021, for Lucifer season 5 to premiere.
The celebrities who are returning, and joining, season 5 of Lucifer
There has not been a shortage of projecting information for Lucifer’s fifth season. Based on the members of the cast featured in the tweet we can say that series regulars like Aimee Garcia, Lauren German, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Rachael Harris, Kevin Alejandro, and Tom Ellis are coming back.
In February 2020, Entertainment Weekly verified that Inbar Lavi will be returning to play Eve in the last season. Another fascinating coming player was confirmed soon after filming began in 2019: Tricia Helfer, who played with Charlotte way back in season two, will be returning to the show, even though there’s some speculation about whether she’ll be reprising her role or emerging in a different one, entirely (via TVLine).
We have also learned about some new additions to the cast. At an of tweets announced that Matthew Bohrer, Erin Cummings, Brianne Davis, Catherine Dent, and Chaley Rose will appear on the season. Popstar Debbie Gibson is also appearing in an announced musical event (via Entertainment Weekly).
There is one last significant piece of casting news too. The season will feature 24 alum Dennis Haysbert as none other than God — not a function for its veteran TV actor as reported by Entertainment Weekly!
What we know about the Lucifer season 5 plot
Season 4 ended with a huge shift for the sequence. As the ruler of Hell, Lucifer accepted his position after many years on Earth, descending into the underworld. What does this imply for the season?
Showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich spoke to Entertainment Weekly about year 5, and while they did not give any particulars, they did tease the last season would be going for broke. Henderson said they’d devised multiple”amazing” ways to bring Lucifer back from Hell. Meanwhile, Modrovich described the ethos of the way that they were coming season 5, stating, “If everybody is speculating on a single thing, we simply try to think as bats *** because we could, as out of the box as you can, so that people don’t get tired, so we don’t get tired”
One out-of-the-box direction the series will be moving in its final season is the inclusion of motif episodes. Entertainment Tonight and Entertainment Weekly confirmed that there will be an event, in addition to a 1940s noir-themed episode. How these particular digressions from the series’ setting will come around has not yet been declared.
Are there any spoilers for Lucifer season 5?
We’ve been getting some pretty good kernels of advice about what to expect from season 5’s story, but appropriate spoilers have been few and far between. There has, however, been some speculation that might give fans that are anxious to understand the final season will unfold something to chew on.
On May 20th, Digital Spy reported a concept based on a group photograph tweeted by showrunner Joe Henderson. The comprises series leads Lauren and Tom Ellis German lying on the grass in a garden that is beautiful. Given how idyllic the atmosphere appears, writer, Joe Anderton surmised that the scene was meant to be placed at the Garden of Eden, meaning the show’s fifth season will be bringing its personalities into the celestial kingdom.
Another piece of spoiler chatter for Lucifer’s last season is the fact that it may not be the last season, after all. Even though the original statement came with the caveat that year 5 could be the show’s last, rumors swirled that Tom Ellis was preparing to sign a contract to return to the show for a sixth time (through TVLine). The last we’ve heard is that the contract talks between Ellis and Warner have postponed, but the system remains committed to getting the celebrity to sign (via TVLine). As of now, we are still treating season 5 as the show’s finale, however, don’t be shocked if we’re back here next year speculating about what’s in store for Lucifer season.
