New Toyota GT86 Arrives Summer 2021 with Turbo Engine 260bhp

Leaked details from a distributor conference will potentially give us some valuable information about the next ‘GR86’.

The new Toyota GT86’s all shifting. The coupe will be much more powerful, using a turbocharged engine. And will not even brand GT86- so it supposed to follow the mantle ‘GR86’ in line. So, with the more recent production cars from the Japanese business.

The core information for the car allegedly leaked from a dealer conference via a presentation slide and other info as posted on GR86.org. Based on this new knowledge we are looking at a 256bhp (260hp) output from a 2.4-liter boxer engine.

Features:

As with the new GT86, Subaru is providing the engine and will make its BRZ-badged version of the GR86. That matches the performance of the newly produced 2.4-liter ‘FA24’ found in the Ascent. So, we expect would be the starting point for a 400bhp boxer built for the next WRX STI.

Complain what you like about its fuel scarcity and torque drain, but the naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter boxer with its peak speed limit of 7000rpm is one of the USPs of the GT86. Conversely, the FA24 produces production at 5600rpm. Hopefully, getting a livelier top end in the GR86 can get tweaked.

In any case, the key appeal of the GT86-the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration-will remains unchanged. This will also have a nicer interior and it will ideally also be fairly cheap because Toyota would have to slot it under the GR Supra’s inline-four version.
