Red Bull’s Albon: Formula 1 rivals would have found Mercedes DAS sneaky

Red Bull driver Alex Albon reckons Formula 1 teams would have discovered the “sneaky”. Dual-axis steering development of Mercedes even if it did not pick up on pre-season TV footage testing.

F1 broadcasts the two 2020 pre-season tests in Barcelona. The innovative system of Mercedes found to used by Lewis Hamilton during his stint on the morning of the second day of the opening test last week.

It leads to considerable debate about what Mercedes was doing. Whether it was legitimate. With competing teams both expressing interest and raising questions about their own.

Albon said maybe we wouldn’t have seen it in training too early. But he clarified that the tradition of F1 teams recruiting photographers to keep an eye. So, the competitors would have alerted them to what Mercedes was doing before the public became aware.

But nowadays teams have photographers everywhere, at the same time. We might have known about this and you guys wouldn’t have.

We spoke with the team about it – how would that feel just like a driver; it must feel very strange to move the steering wheel.

But that’s what testing is about and also about what simulators are about. So, I am sure they’ve already tried it.

But they’re sly. To be honest, I really don’t know what it is used for-I was driving the whole day.

So I just came back with no debrief and all of a sudden this thing was on the television all of the time-replays of the steering.

Red Bull Concern About DAS version:

When asked if Red Bull was concerned it didn’t have its own version of DAS on the RB16, which Albon and teammate Max Verstappen called a step forward on the 2019 challenger of the team, Albon said: “No-we’re focusing on ourselves at the minute.

Of course, maybe that’s a future thing but we’ve just done our runs for the moment, get the laps in, get miles in.
