Tesla has issued yet another recall for its polarizing Cybertruck, this time affecting 2,431 units in the United States due to a potentially dangerous drive inverter malfunction. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed the recall on April 17, 2025, marking the sixth recall for the stainless-steel pickup since deliveries began in late 2023.

What’s Wrong With the Tesla Cybertruck Drive Inverter?

According to NHTSA documents, the drive inverter in affected Cybertrucks may stop producing torque when the driver presses the accelerator pedal. This complete loss of power can occur without warning, creating a serious safety hazard—especially in highway merging situations, intersections, or emergency maneuvers.

The issue stems from a transistor failure within the drive inverter assembly. When this component fails, it causes an immediate and total loss of propulsion while the vehicle is in motion. Tesla’s internal testing detected the problem during quality control checks before owners reported field failures.

Affected vehicles were manufactured between November 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024. Tesla will replace the drive inverter assembly free of charge at authorized service centers.

Tesla Cybertruck Recall History Raises Quality Concerns

This latest recall adds to a growing list of quality control issues plaguing the Cybertruck since launch. Previous recalls have addressed:

  • Accelerator pedal pads that could dislodge and cause unintended acceleration (April 2024)
  • Windshield wiper motor failures affecting visibility (June 2024)
  • Trim pieces that could detach and create road hazards (June 2024)
  • Faulty rearview camera displays (September 2024)
  • Improperly secured trunk bed trim (January 2025)

For a vehicle that started at nearly $100,000 when reservations opened—and now commands prices exceeding $120,000 for top trims—the frequency of safety recalls is raising eyebrows among automotive industry analysts and reservation holders alike.

Production Challenges Behind the Problems

Industry experts point to the Cybertruck’s unconventional manufacturing processes as a likely contributor to these recurring issues. The vehicle’s 30X cold-rolled stainless steel exoskeleton, massive castings, and 48-volt electrical architecture represent significant departures from traditional truck construction.

Tesla’s rush to production after multiple delays—the Cybertruck was originally announced in 2019—may have compressed validation testing timelines. CEO Elon Musk himself warned investors in 2023 that the company had “dug its own grave” with the ambitious design.

What Cybertruck Owners Should Do Now

Tesla is notifying affected owners via mail and through their vehicle touchscreens. Owners can also check if their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their VIN on the NHTSA website or contacting Tesla customer service directly.

The automaker advises owners to continue driving their Cybertrucks normally while awaiting repair appointments, though recommends avoiding situations requiring maximum acceleration until the inverter replacement is completed.

Service appointments are expected to begin in late April 2025. Tesla estimates the repair will take approximately two hours per vehicle.

Impact on Cybertruck Reputation and Sales

Despite the mounting recalls, Cybertruck demand has remained surprisingly robust. Tesla delivered approximately 40,000 units in 2024, making it one of the best-selling electric trucks in America—albeit with limited competition in the segment.

However, the constant stream of safety issues may finally be taking a toll. Reservation cancellations reportedly increased 23% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to Q4 2024, according to industry tracking data from Automotive News.

The Cybertruck’s reliability problems also stand in stark contrast to competitors like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T, both of which have experienced significantly fewer recalls relative to production volumes.

Looking Ahead

Tesla’s ability to resolve these quality issues will be critical as competition in the electric truck segment intensifies. Chevrolet’s Silverado EV is ramping up production, while Ram’s upcoming electric 1500 REV promises traditional truck buyers an alternative to the Cybertruck’s radical styling.

For now, Cybertruck owners and reservation holders are left wondering whether Tesla can engineer its way out of these reliability challenges—or if the ambitious design simply pushed too far beyond conventional automotive wisdom.
