While first celebrity Hugo Weaving won’t reprise the role from the forthcoming Lana Wachowski-directed movie, leaked footage from the set of The Matrix 4 has led to a new concept that Agent Smith could, in actuality, make his return in the movie disguised as Neo.
Back in The Matrix: Revolutions, Neo allowed Smith to assimilate him during their climactic fight, which caused them to be ruined. However, set footage reveals multiple duplicates swarming two vehicles, a strategy which Smith employed in the past movies in the Matrix franchise. Scheduling conflicts mean Smith isn’t going to reunite in his form, so where Neo comes in this is.
Agent Smith revealed in The Matrix: Reloaded that a part of Neo resides in him after his defeat after the first film. This resulted in his breeding skills, as he managed to infect other broker programs in The Matrix as well as people in the actual world, for example, Bane. Smith could potentially masquerade, as evidenced by copying his competitor’s appearance and puppeteer events.
Similarly, the villain may manifest himself. By enabling Smith to assimilate him in The Matrix: Revolutions’ finale, Neo may have learned how to use Smith’s code to duplicate himself to deceive death. If that is true, Neo may be struggling to control the Smith inside of him, which might result in him recreating or assaulting other returning characters such as Trinity or Niobe. This could explain how, despite character deaths in The Matrix: Revolutions, key characteristics are coming, and the leaked collection footage features copies.
With everything that happened in the trilogy’s close, it’s also likely that Neo could become the new agent program inside The Matrix. Fearing Agent Smith had become overly capability, a truce struck with the people and Neo to block the spread of the AI. After witnessing his forfeit, his body was taken by the machines into their city, seemingly. They might have generated a rebooted Neo, deciding he would make the right protector for Your Matrix moving forward. This theory is a small stretch, but it would nevertheless allow Neo to carry on a sinister part in the show if the narrative required it.
There is much potential for where the franchise can proceed out of here. As soon as it’s no verification, the footage indicates something is afoot in The Matrix. The absence of weaving does not necessarily imply, and it may just be that he comes back in the kind of his enemy, making for one heck of a plot twist.
Lana Wachowski directs them, and The Matrix 4 Stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick and Jonathan Groff. April 1, 2022, the film is scheduled to arrive.
