A lot of people asked if the difference in price between the current BMW M5 and the M8 is worth it.
Leaving aside the preference for body style. People want to know is how much of a gap between these performances is there. Well, lucky for us, for some answers, CarWow and Joe Achilles joined forces. In the guise of Competition, they got these two cars together and they had a drag race.
You would discover that it is reported that the M8 Competition is quicker. The problem is that looking at the output of power and torque, and even the gearbox and all-wheel-drive system. Both are identical. Both cars come with the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 which makes a torque of 625 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).
In comparison, they both have the same ZF 8-speed gearbox and the same all-wheel-drive mechanism as M xDrive.
And yet 0-62 mph results recorded by BMW lean in favor of the M8. The Coupe estimated to be doing the sprint in 3.2 seconds. While the M5 Competition requires more than 0.1 seconds. Admittedly, both cars were checked separately and showed better times but the M8 was just a tad bit quicker each time.
What is the deal, then? The video below shows that the M8’s Launch Control feature works well and is more robust while the M5’s app is a little bit fiddler.
That might be down to the driver though as Joe has some trouble getting the vehicle to act accordingly. Nonetheless, he is a somewhat experienced driver who has had plenty of time with recent BMWs to know. How they work so if it happens to him, it can happen to anyone.
The rolling race reveals how cars influenced by aerodynamics at higher speeds, which a reasonable explanation for the victory of the M8. The small weight gap could have helped the M5 win in the brake check. Even though I believe Joe weighs more than Mat so the advantage is nullified.
