Volvo introduces 112-mph speed limit across range

Volvo will go ahead with plans to introduce an electronic speed limiter across its range. First, it announces in early 2019 the limiter will cap the top speed of Volvos from the 2021 model year on at 180 kph i.e. approx. 112 mph.

So this is well above the legal speed limit for most of the public road around the globe. It will affect things for Volvo fans who enjoy track days. Also with the high-speed jaunts on Germany speed unlimited Autobahns.

However, the limiter won’t feature models from Volvo sister brand Polestar. A spokesman for the performance EV brand tells Motor Authority a year ago when it announces plans for the limiter.

Volvo stated that the move aims to improve road safety and also demonstrate how automakers, can help to promote safer driving. So Volvo is not a pioneer in this regard. Though Japenese automakers for years limit the top speed of their vehicle to 112 mph as a part of the agreement. Most of the German automakers also limit the speed of their vehicle to 115mph.

Volvo announces Wednesday’s plans to introduce a driver-select speed limiter. Similarly, technology offers by the other automakers. Volvo will introduce the new car key that allows to driver to set their own limits below 112mph. For example- whenever lending the keys to a new driver in the family.
