Geely’s premium electric brand Zeekr has revealed details of its upcoming 8X plug-in hybrid SUV, boasting more than 400 kilometers of pure electric range, a three-motor all-wheel-drive system, and an 800-volt architecture typically reserved for high-end battery-electric vehicles.

The model is expected to debut in the fourth quarter of 2025, with sales beginning early the following year. It slots between the smaller, pure-electric 7X and the flagship 9X in Zeekr’s expanding lineup, marking the brand’s continued push into plug-in hybrid territory alongside its core battery-electric offerings.

According to leaked specifications and reports from Chinese automotive media, the top variant will use a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with three electric motors. Combined system output is expected to reach approximately 400 kW (544 PS) with peak torque around 700 Nm. The multi-motor layout enables all-wheel drive with independent torque vectoring, allowing precise power distribution to each wheel for improved handling and traction.

Electric vehicle charging
The 8X’s 800-volt architecture enables 10-80% charging in approximately 15 minutes.

Perhaps the most unusual aspect of the 8X is its reported 800- to 900-volt electrical architecture—a setup typically reserved for high-end pure electric vehicles like the Porsche Taycan and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Zeekr claims 10 to 80 percent DC fast charging in approximately 15 minutes under optimal conditions. If confirmed, this would make the 8X one of the few plug-in hybrids with ultra-rapid charging capability. The high-voltage system also enables vehicle-to-load functionality for powering external devices.

Battery capacity is projected at around 70 kWh for the top trim, with a smaller 55 kWh option likely available on lower variants. Pure electric range exceeds 400 kilometers under China’s CLTC testing cycle. With a full fuel tank, total driving range should surpass 1,200 kilometers. Fuel consumption in hybrid mode is estimated at just 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

The model will be built in China on Geely’s SEA-S platform, a hybrid-capable variant of the architecture used across several brands in the conglomerate, including Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus. Interior configurations include a luxury six-seat layout and traditional three-row seating, though Zeekr has not released official dimensions. Advanced driver assistance features are expected, possibly including LiDAR and multi-sensor systems similar to the larger 9X. Adaptive air suspension is rumored but unconfirmed.

Reported Chinese pricing starts around ¥400,000 (approximately $56,000) and climbs to roughly ¥450,000 ($63,000) for higher trims. At that price point, the 8X would undercut European rivals like the BMW X5 xDrive50e, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, and Mercedes-Benz GLE 350e while offering significantly longer electric-only range.

The 8X will initially launch in China, with potential expansion to Australia and Europe afterward. Zeekr has not announced plans for the United States.

Zeekr launched in 2021 as the premium electric vehicle division of Geely Holding Group, which also owns Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, and holds a significant stake in Daimler. The brand went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2024. The larger 9X flagship PHEV uses a similar powertrain with outputs ranging from 660 kW to over 1,000 kW, while the smaller 7X is a pure battery-electric model offering up to 780 kilometers of CLTC range.

Editor’s note: Zeekr has not released an official specification sheet for the 8X. Figures are drawn from Chinese automotive media reports and leaked documents. Final specifications may differ. All range figures use China’s CLTC testing standard, which typically produces higher results than WLTP or EPA testing.
