BMW has just unleashed a factory track package for the M3 CS that transforms the already potent sedan into a circuit-ready missile. The optional Track Performance Package adds serious aerodynamic hardware and sticky rubber that BMW claims can shave seconds off lap times.

What’s in the BMW M3 CS Track Package

The centerpiece of this BMW M3 CS upgrade revolves around genuine motorsport-derived components. BMW M Motorsport engineers developed the package using lessons learned from the M4 GT3 race car program.

The carbon fiber front splitter extends 3 inches beyond the standard CS bumper, generating 40% more downforce at highway speeds. Combined with the new rear wing—also carbon fiber—total downforce increases by 88 pounds at 124 mph compared to the base M3 CS.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R Tires Come Standard

BMW ditches the standard Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber for track-focused Pilot Sport Cup 2 R compound tires. These semi-slick tires feature:

  • 285/30ZR20 front and 295/30ZR20 rear sizing
  • Specialized compound that operates optimally between 80-200°F
  • Tread pattern designed for maximum dry grip
  • DOT approval for street legality

The Cup 2 R rubber alone accounts for a claimed 2.3-second improvement around BMW’s 2.3-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife test section.

Performance Numbers That Matter

BMW hasn’t touched the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which continues producing 543 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. However, the aerodynamic improvements and tire upgrade deliver measurable track performance gains.

Internal testing shows the Track Package-equipped M3 CS posting a 7:25.7 Nürburgring lap time—4.1 seconds faster than the standard CS. That puts it within striking distance of the previous-generation M3 GTS, which held the sedan lap record for years.

Cooling and Brake Upgrades Included

BMW recognized that track duty demands better heat management. The package includes:

  • Enlarged brake cooling ducts with carbon fiber deflectors
  • Additional engine oil cooler with dedicated air intake
  • Transmission cooler upgrade for the 8-speed automatic
  • Modified engine mapping for sustained high-RPM operation

Pricing and Availability Details

The Track Performance Package carries a $8,900 premium over the already expensive M3 CS, which starts at $119,695. That brings total pricing to $128,595 before options and destination charges.

BMW will offer the package through M Performance Parts dealers starting in February 2024. Existing M3 CS owners can retrofit the components, though BMW recommends professional installation due to the aerodynamic recalibration required.

Production numbers remain limited. BMW plans only 1,200 Track Package units for the North American market, with roughly 300 allocated to the UK market.

Competition and Market Context

This move puts BMW directly in competition with Mercedes-AMG’s C63 S E Performance and Audi’s upcoming RS4 Avant. Both German rivals offer factory track packages, but BMW’s approach focuses purely on aerodynamic and tire improvements rather than power increases.

The M3 CS Track Package also represents BMW’s attempt to capture buyers who might otherwise consider aftermarket solutions. Companies like Dinan and BMS have offered similar upgrades, but factory backing provides warranty protection and dealer support.

Future Implications

BMW’s commitment to track-focused packages signals a broader strategy shift. With electrification looming, the company appears determined to maximize the performance potential of its final generation of purely internal combustion M cars.

Expect similar treatment for the M4 Competition and potentially the M5 CS when it arrives next year. BMW M’s philosophy increasingly centers on offering customers genuine motorsport technology in street-legal packages.
