The motorsport pinnacle has met with the top football tier as Lewis Hamilton won Monday night. Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award shared with Lionel Messi of Barcelona FC.
The six-time Formula 1 winner, aiming for a record-equaling seventh crown. Divided the prize with Messi, marking the first time the distinction shared by two sportsmen.
Messi won a record sixth Ballon d’Or in 2019. So, this made his 700th appearance for Barcelona and ended the 35th hat-trick for the Catalan club in 2019. Because of an accomplishment that highlights just how remarkable the six championships Hamilton has been.
The fellow candidates included six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, 2019 Masters winner Tiger Woods, marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge and No. 1 tennis star Rafael Nadal, apart from Messi.
Hamilton had never previously won World Sportsman of the Year, but this was his sixth nomination. From the Formula 1 world the only other past winners are Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher. Mercedes have also been named for Team of the Year but lost to the rugby union team in South Africa.
Nonetheless, don’t rule them out for next year. The pre-season trials coming up, the Silver Arrows are training for a competition that might see them capping off the turbo-hybrid period with another double championship.
