Testing the 2024 Kia EV9: A 40,000-Mile Journey

The Kia EV9 in our long-term test is the mid-range Land trim with all-wheel drive and the 99.8 kWh battery. In the first 3 months and 2,450 miles, we’ve experienced comfortable commutes and cargo-filled trips.

The EV9 rides smoothly thanks to its minimal road noise and cushioned seats. While handling is secure at a steady pace, the soft suspension transmits bumps when hustling. After a 45-mile highway trip with heavy AC usage, the EV9’s battery dropped from 80% to 52%.

Charging times have been excellent. When using an Electrify America 150kW fast charger, the EV9 went from 21% to 90% charge in 39 minutes. For daily use, it takes 6-7 hours to fully charge on a Level 2 outlet.

The large battery means trips up to 300 miles are achievable. Range will decrease with extra passengers or cargo, as well as use of climate controls. However, even after 40,000 miles we expect the EV9 to retain the majority of its charge capacity.

The long-term tester is the mid-range Land trim, which starts at $63,900. It comes well-equipped with standard all-wheel drive powered by dual electric motors.

This offers traction in varied weather and quick acceleration off the line. The Land also benefits from Kia’s largest 99.8 kWh battery, delivering an EPA estimated 280 miles of range – the most available in the EV9 lineup.

After 2,450 miles to date, we’re averaging 276Wh/mile, indicating the battery should maintain around 90% of its capacity even after 40,000 miles as promised. The large battery allows for longer road trips between charges compared to lower trims.

It also ensures adequate power reserves for mountainous regions or extremely cold temperatures that can sap smaller batteries quicker. Dual-motor all-wheel drive gives confidence handling winter weather too.

Early impressions suggest the Land trim strikes an excellent balance of utility and performance for most American families. Its range and passenger/cargo abilities are suitable for diverse use cases while priced below luxury competitors.

Interior Comfort: Reclining Captain’s Chairs and More

The spacious cabin of the 2024 Kia EV9 Land is designed with comfort and functionality in mind. Heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats keep front passengers cozy in all weather.

This car also features a $2,000 option package with power-reclining captain’s chairs for the middle row. These allow rear seating to relax in lounge or ottoman positions while enjoying a movie. Climate controls, USB ports and cupholders make the third row livable too.

Passengers will appreciate the standard 30-inch curved display spanning the dash. Its crystal-clear graphics make navigation and entertainment engaging on long hauls. A quiet drive is ensured thanks to expansive sound-deadening and the standard 14-speaker Meridian audio system.

It produces crisp, surround-sound quality whether listening to music or books on tape. After 4,000 miles, the seats still feel plush and supporting as new. Overall interior quality gives the feeling of a luxury SUV at a non-luxury price point.

The 2024 Kia EV9’s E-GMP Architecture and Fast Charging

The Kia EV9 is built using the company’s innovative E-GMP modular platform, providing an advanced foundation for an electric lifestyle.

This flexible 800-volt architecture allows for ultra-fast charging at rates up to 350kW – nearly unheard of in the large SUV segment. During early testing, jumping from 10% to 80% battery took around 25 minutes on a 150kW public fast charger, adding over 200 miles of range.

For daily use, the standard onboard 7.2kW charger refills the battery to 100% in 10 hours plugged into a 240V wall box. But weekend road trips are made easy with the high-powered DC quick charging network now spanning much of North America.

Compared to gas competitors, the EV9 kicks off the line like a muscle car with its linear torque curve that peaks from a standstill. Passing maneuvers on the highway feel stress-free whether fully loaded or lightly cruising.

The electric motors provide smooth, nuanced power even at neighborhood speeds too. This drivetrain shows no signs of degradation after initial months of varied daily driving conditions. Kia also backs the EV9 with a long 10-year, 100,000 mile limited warranty on its battery and drive components.

2024 Kia EV9 vs Its Gas-Powered Counterparts and Tow Capacity

While three-row electric SUVs are still an emerging product segment, the 2024 Kia EV9 holds its own against established gas-fueled competitors.

It easily seats more passengers than smaller battery-based options, yet undercuts luxury brands in both starting MSRP and total cost of ownership.

Compared to a 7-seat Toyota Highlander Hybrid with today’s gas prices, the EV9 driver could save over $1,000 annually on fuel alone.

Early indications also show the EV9 should provide several years or 100,000+ miles of trouble-free operation before needing costly repairs – unlike aging gas SUVs prone to expensive issues outside warranty.

When maximizing cargo space, the EV9 can flat-tow up to 3,500 lbs, enabling transport of toys like jet skis or small campers. While tow ratings lag full-size trucks, the EV9 meets most light hauling needs of families. Its well-rounded value proposition makes a strong case as the new normal for eco-conscious drivers.

Real-World Range and Efficiency: Highway Tests and Observed Fuel Economys

With its large battery providing an EPA estimated 280 miles of range, the 2024 Kia EV9 Land has not disappointed during real-world testing across diverse climates and terrain.

On 450-mile highway road trips with a full complement of passengers and cargo, typical range averages hovered around 250 miles per full charge. The EV9 also exhibited strong efficiency, using only 275-285 watt-hours of energy per mile at steady 70-75 mph speeds with minimal extra battery depletion from climate controls.

Over 2,450 local commute miles, the average “fuel economy” readout has been exemplary at 280 Wh/mile. This efficiency surpasses many smaller EVs and matches what we typically see from friends’ Tesla Models Y.

Kia’s sophisticated thermal management and optimized motors clearly make the most of every kilowatt-hour stored. Even in dense city traffic or frequent fast charging, the battery management system has yet to show noticeable degradation.

If these positive trends hold, the EV9 should continue providing real-world range well above some rival manufacturers’ stated figures.

Lack of Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, and Maintenance Issues

Our only minor complaints about the 2024 Kia EV9 Land long-term tester after many miles center around its infotainment technology and maintenance track record so far.

While the standard CarPlay and Android Auto are handy, not including newfangled wireless versions for seamless on-the-go operation with smartphones is an oversight. The lack of over-the-air software updates to potentially expand features down the road is also disappointing from a tech-forward brand.

On the maintenance front, we had to replace windshield wiper blades already at the 2,450 mile point due to drying and cracking in hot sunny weather. Regular twice-yearly inspections also show no concerning issues for now.

However, the true test as an electric SUV will be how components like the battery and drive units hold up over 5+ years outside warranty coverage.

For buyers keeping vehicles a decade or more, long-term durability and service costs represent important considerations that only time will fully reveal for the pioneering EV9.
