Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale fourth season premiere was pushed to 2021. The announcement came through Hulu’s virtual NewFronts presentation and, at this time, an exact date to the popular series’ yield hasn’t been set. The Handmaid’s Tale is simply the most recent entertainment offering to see its premiere postponed as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic as back in March, production on the fourth year of this Elisabeth Moss-starring dystopian drama has been halted as a result of the pandemic. It is also not clear now when production on the series will restart.
The Handmaid’s Tale was a remarkably popular series for Hulu and has been originally renewed for a fourth season ahead of the Season 3 finale in 2019. The series has also done very well concerning critics and awards, winning 11 Emmys over two seasons. Inspired from the Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name, the third year saw Moss’ character, June, remain behind in Gilead after sending her newborn baby daughter to security in Canada. The season ended on a bit of a cliffhanger with June and other handmaids helping liberate children from Gilead by getting them out through plane to Canada, though June is taken in the procedure and while she is alive at the close of the year, her situation seems dire.
As for what’s next in Season 4, that stays a bit of a puzzle, although Moss told ComicBook.com earlier this year which The Handmaid’s Tale is ultimately June’s story and when her journey ends, so will the series.
Nevertheless, there could be more about Gilead to explore — without June — at a different series. Last fall saw the introduction of Atwood’s sequel novel, The Testaments, which happened 15 years after the events of the first novel, though long before its predecessor’s epilogue. Ahead of that publication’s release, Hulu and MGM announced they would be developing a new series inspired by that book, together with showrunner Bruce Miller at the helm.
