It has been a wild ride for lovers of the devilish authorities Lucifer, depending on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman. After the titular angel spent three seasons charming the pants off us on the show community, the series was canceled. Thankfully, Netflix immediately scooped it up. After some doubt about Lucifer’s future, the giant that was streaming announced that the show would be returning for a fifth and final season.
This was excellent news, as season 4 was a crazy ride, which ended with some pretty extreme developments. We were introduced into Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) old fire, Eve (Inbar Lavi), we watched the kidnapping of this half-angel baby, Charlie, and everything had been capped off with Lucifer descending to Hell to prevent an ancient prophecy about evil taking over the Earth from coming true. It was a great deal for the figures and viewers to process, and we’ll get time to wrap everything up.
As for when we could expect to see season 5, who’s confirmed to be coming back, and in which the story will go, we have lots of facts to sift through while we wait for the premiere. Let us get into everything we understand about Lucifer season 5.
When is Lucifer year five falling on Netflix?
At the time of this writing, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for season 5 of Lucifer. We do have some hints about the products that can help us make some educated guesses.
On September 5th, 2019, the Netflix-affiliated Twitter account See What is Next tweeted a photograph of the cast together with the caption,”#Lucifer Season 5 begins filming tomorrow!! Can’t wait.” Another generation update came in February 2020, when showrunner Ildy Modrovich took to Twitter to declare: “Last day in [the Lucifer writer’s] room. They’ll always be my family.”
All of this good news came before filming was halted, along with many other TV and movie productions, due to this COVID-19 pandemic. While the delay might be discouraging for fans, we do that the authors are finished crafting the season and know that filming was underway before manufacturing went on hiatus. But when things get back up and running, it will result in some episodes being seen by us earlier, rather than later.
One last thing to think about is that, before the production hiatus, Netflix announced plans to split the previous season into two halves, airing two collections of eight episodes with a rest between (via TVLine). Depending on how far along generation was before it shut down, this could mean we get new episodes even sooner than we anticipate since they won’t need to complete producing the year. Without any official statement, however, all we could do at this point is speculate. Our best guess is that we will be waiting in 2021 until 2020, or sometimes, for Lucifer season 5 to premiere.
The celebrities who are returning to, and joining, season 5 of Lucifer
There has not been a shortage of projecting information for Lucifer’s fifth season. Dependent on the members of this cast featured in the tweet, we can state that series regulars like Lesley-Ann Brandt, Lauren German, Tom Ellis, Rachael Harris, Kevin Alejandro, and Aimee Garcia are coming back.
In February 2020, Entertainment Weekly verified that Inbar Lavi would be returning to play with Eve in the last season. Another fascinating coming player was confirmed shortly after filming began in 2019: Tricia Helfer, who played Charlotte back in season 2, will soon be returning to the show, even though there’s some speculation about whether she’ll be reprising her character or appearing at another one, entirely (via TVLine).
We’ve also heard about a few new additions to the cast. At a series of tweets announced that Erin Cummings Matthew Bohrer, Brianne Davis, Catherine Dent, and Chaley Rose would appear in the year. Popstar Debbie Gibson will also be looking at an announced musical event (via Entertainment Weekly).
There’s one last significant bit of casting news to get to. The fifth season will feature 24 alum Dennis Haysbert as none other than God — not a wrong role for the veteran TV actor as reported by Entertainment Weekly!
What we know about the Lucifer season 5 plot
Season 4 ended with a massive shift for the sequence. After many years on Earth, Lucifer recognized his position as the ruler of Hell, descending into the underworld. What exactly does this imply for the season?
Showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich spoke to Entertainment Weekly about season 5, and while they didn’t give any particulars, they did tease the final season would be risking. Henderson said they’d devised multiple”amazing” ways to bring Lucifer back from Hell. Meanwhile, Modrovich explained the ethos of how they were coming season 5, stating, “If everyone is speculating on one thing, we simply try to believe as bats *** because we could, as outside of the box as you can, so people do not get bored, so we do not get bored.”
One out-of-the-box direction the show will be going in its final season is that the addition of these episodes. Entertainment Tonight and Entertainment Weekly confirmed that there would be an event, as well as a 1940s episode. How these digressions in the series’ setting that is contemporary will come around has yet to be declared.
Are there some spoilers for Lucifer season 5?
We’ve been getting some delicious kernels of information on what to expect from season 5’s story, but appropriate spoilers are few and far between. There has, however, been some speculation that might give fans that are anxious to understand how the season will unfold something to chew on.
On May 20th, Digital Spy reported a concept based on a set photo tweeted by showrunner Joe Henderson. The photograph comprises show leads Tom Ellis and Lauren German lying on the grass in a gorgeous garden. Given how the setting looks, writer, Joe Anderton surmised that the scene was meant to be set in the Garden of Eden, meaning that the fifth season of the show will be bringing its personalities into the celestial kingdom.
Another bit of spoiler chatter for Lucifer’s last season is that it may not be the previous season, after all. Although the original statement came with the caveat that season five would be the show’s final, rumors swirled that Tom Ellis was planning to sign a contract to go back to the show for a sixth time (via TVLine). The last we’ve discovered is that the contract talks between Ellis and Warner have postponed, but that the network is still committed for the actor to sign (via TVLine). As of now, we’re still treating season five because the show’s finale, but don’t be too shocked if we are back next year speculating about what is in store for Lucifer season.
